Children's Song - Bartok (c. 1908) arr Jo Quail

by Jo Quail

This was one of the first piano pieces I recall learning, and loving, as a little one, and like Schein's Intrada it's stayed with me throughout my life. This piece seems to me to evoke a collective nostalgia in some respects, perhaps in fact my own nostalgia, but even as a child it seemed to have some extra meaning for me; an absolute depth somehow in this tiny fragment of folk music that I hoped to bring out in my arrangement.

Recorded at home with my DPA mic, each line performed in one take.
